Vilasar
A 34' Double-Ended Ketch
By William Atkin
A Wholesome and Attractive Cruising Ketch
This wholesome and attractive cruising ketch was designed by Atkin and Co., of Darien, Connecticut, for Commander John Duberg of Bridgeport. The boat was built by J. Gallart, Vilasar de Mar, Barcelona, Spain. The workmanship is excellent and compares with the best available in this country. This is the second yacht of Atkin design built by this yard.
The rig is simple, with the minimum of standing rigging of Roebling's galvanized iron wire of generous diameter. Total sail area is 599 square feet. Vilasar is 34 feet long overall, 29 feet on the waterline; she has a beam of 10 feet, 4 inches and draws 5 feet. Her displacement is 21,000 pounds, with 5,400 pounds of iron or lead on her keel and 3,500 pounds of inside ballast.
Below deck arrangements show two built-in berths forward, followed by a head to starboard and lockers to port. The main cabin contains a box berth to port which conceals outboard shelves when closed. The bottom is finished and forms a comfortable backrest. A combination lounge and berth is on the opposite side. The galley is aft and carefully thought out by Mrs. Duberg, providing everything necessary for living aboard.
The auxiliary power is provided by a Mercedes-Benz diesel engine housed under the bridge deck and cockpit floor which drives through a 2 to 1 reduction gear and delivers a speed of seven and a half miles an hour. The fuel tanks have a capacity of fifty gallons and the water tanks fifty-five gallons. A lovely yacht with much good hand work in her construction.
