Syltu
A 37' 5 1/2" Double-Ended Ketch
By John Atkin
The dimensions of Syltu are 36 feet, 5 1/2 inches length on deck; 31 feet waterline length; 10 feet, 6 1/2 inches beam; and 4 feet, 6 3/4 inches draft. Her displacement is 20,500 pounds, of which the lead ballast keel is 8,200 pounds. Her sail area is 488 square feet in mainsail, staysail, and mizzen. Syltu should be a good cruising boat in all kinds of weather. In addition, her modest sail area should make her easy to handle by two people. Both main and mizzen mast are set in tabernacles to enable these spars to be lowered and removed for winter storage without disturbing wedges or the watertight deck.
Syltu was designed for comfortable cruising accommodations for four persons. By today's standards a 31-foot-waterline boat sleeps nearly twice that number with resulting crowded conditions. Syltu was not designed with any racing rule in mind. Her owner does not intend to race and therefore he does not have to berth and feed a large racing crew. With this in mind her accommodations for only four makes sense and more enjoyable cruising conditions are gained thereby. Syltu is relatively shoal, as desired by her owner, and this influences her accommodations in the fore-peak, which are a bit crowded in my opinion.

Syltu is powered by a four cylinder Westerbeke diesel (though a Mercedes is shown on the drawings, it wasn't used). She could use additional horsepower to push her 20,500 pounds along at a more realistic speed. But the yacht does tend to "inspire" a sense of security, which I feel is important.

Four sisterships of Syltu have been built. The design has considerable appeal for cruising and is an interesting example of the enduring legacy of Colin Archer's influence on the design of small yachts.
