Nancy
A 15' 6" Round-Sided Dory
By William Atkin
Here, shipmates, is a little boat in which a couple of you can sail in safety and reasonable comfort anytime. Dories are famous for their ability to ride out the vilest weather; indeed it was in just such a craft that the hardy Alfred Johnson sailed single-handed from Gloucester to Liverpool in 1875. Centennial, his dory, was little larger than our Nancy; only 20 feet by 5 feet, 5 inches beam.
The youngest of our family of boats is 15 feet, 6 inches in overall length, has a water-line length of 13 feet, 6 inches, a breadth of 5 feet, and draws 6 inches of water with her center-board up, and two people aboard. She is not a pure dory; the original model as used for fishing has straight topsides and is slightly narrower aft than my drawings. However for use as a pleasure boat the modifications are improvements over the older type.
Keeping the length under 16 feet permits using 16-foot cedar for the topside planking without excessive wastage. And then you will notice that the bottom planks will cut from lumber 14 feet long.
